This is the introductory note of sharing my thoughts on artmaking, as well an effort to get better at sharing my work publicly.
For those of you who don’t know me, the boring background is that I’ve had a long and storied career in the design world as a director / motion designer, creating digital media for clients large and small, and for just about every use-case imaginable. Not a perfect career, but I’m proud of the work I’ve completed. You can see some of this work here: festhausdesign.com
But, winds are shifting.
Like many, I’m now being pulled quickly out the door by the forthcoming cold, bony hand of artificial intelligence – but that’s somewhat of a cop-out. The whole truth is that I’ve been tired of starting at screens all day and creating intangible, transitory things – for about a decade now (maybe longer). The event opener got people clapping, the commecial sold some products, the social ad got some likes, and so on, but… it all fades away into obscurity. The saving grace of my career though is some of the content I’ve created recently for museums and theme parks, which has some educational and lasting entertainment value respectively, and has been enjoyable to produce and share with the world.
But, continually maturing, in mind and body, I am determined to support my new goals by digging back into my old roots – the dreamlike place where I started adulthood, and the idyllic world shared briefly with the introduction to my future wife: the finer arts. Yes, this includes the stalwarts of painting and drawing and sculpture, but also writing. Writing in a mature fashion. I’ve always loved short stories, so it will start there. If this post is legible and interesting enough that you haven’t left yet, maybe I have toehold on something…
Anyway, back to the tactile arts.
I have moved my things out of the basement and into a slightly lighter space: the garage. My new pseudo-studio, where I will be creating work that will hang in galleries to come – and confidently, museums. This space will also house my Art Daily series. I’m committed to getting back into this, so by making it public will assure that you, my jury, will keep my feet to the fire: I will be making (at minimum) one artwork daily. Some of these works will be sold here, and some will just live on as sketches, but this will keep me going.
